When high school basketball coach Ken Carter benched his undefeated team in 1999 due to their collectively poor academic record, many people were intrigued. They still are. "Coach Carter," starring Samuel L. Jackson as the no-nonsense coach, opened in top spot at the U.S. box office over the weekend with an estimated $23.6 million. The critically-panned comedy "Meet the Fockers," featuring Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller and Barbra Streisand, was next with $19 million. "Racing Stripes," an animated feature about a zebra who thinks he's a racehorse, debuted in third with $14 million. "Good Company," a comedy starring Dennis Quaid, finished fourth with $13.9 million in its first weekend. Opening in a disappointing fifth place with $12.5 million was Jennifer Garner's superhero effort "Elektra." Rounding out the top ten were: "White Noise" ($12.2 million); "The Aviator" ($4.78 million); "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" ($3.96 million); "The Phantom of the Opera" ($3.55 million); and "Ocean's Twelve" ($2.9 million).
