A goofy cartoon mutt one-upped both an Oscar winner and the most controversial film in years at the box office over the weekend. Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed raked in an estimated $30.7 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada, good for top spot. Based on the popular cartoon series, the film follows the adventures of (a computer-generated) Scooby-Doo and his teenage friends as they save the world from an assortment of bogeymen. Coming in second was Oscar winner Tom Hanks' latest outing, The Ladykillers, which debuted with $13 million. In third place with $12.5 million was Mel Gibson's contentious retelling of the Crucifixion, The Passion of the Christ. The horror flick Dawn of the Dead slipped to fourth place with $10.3 million. Rounding out the top ten were Jersey Girl ($8.3 million); Taking Lives ($6.53 million); Starsky and Hutch ($6.29 million); Hidalgo ($5.43 million); Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ($5.42 million); and Secret Window ($5.4 million). In other movie news, the anticipated blockbuster Spider-Man 2 will now open two days earlier than originally scheduled in order to get a jump on the July 4 long weekend in the U.S. The superhero sequel will hit the big screen on June 30.3/29/2004
