Bad reviews didn't dampen audiences' appetite for "Van Helsing." The new monster thriller enjoyed a blockbuster opening weekend, finishing tops at the box office with an estimated gross of $54.2 million. Starring Hugh Jackman, the film revolves around a vampire slayer, Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, and the Wolf Man. The critically-panned movie took top spot from the teen comedy "Mean Girls," which slipped to second with a take of $14 million. Denzel Washington's kidnap thriller "Man on Fire," came in third with $7.9 million. Another teen comedy, "New York Minute," debuted in fourth place with $6.2 million, followed by the romantic comedy "13 Going On 30" with $5.5 million. Rounding out the top ten were "Laws of Attraction" ($3.5 million); "Kill Bill Vol. 2" ($3 million); "Godsend" ($2.7 million); "Envy" ($2.6 million); and "The Punisher" ($1.2 million).10/5/04
