Thrill-seeking moviegoers flocked to a battle of evil versus evil over the weekend, as Alien Vs. Predator debuted in top spot at the U.S. box office with an estimated gross of $38.2 million. Pitting the out-of-this-world antagonists from the popular Alien and Predator franchises against each another, the horror flick is promoted with the memorable tag line: "Whoever wins, we lose." The film was well ahead of second place The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, the romantic comedy sequel that brought in $23 million in its first weekend in theatres. Last weekend's champ, the Tom Cruise thriller Collateral, slipped to third spot with $16 million. The animated fantasy Yu-Gi-Oh!, based on a trading card series popular among young boys, debuted in fourth with $9.36 million. One of the big summer blockbusters, The Bourne Supremacy starring Matt Damon, filled out the top five with $8.3 million. Rounding out the top ten were: The Village ($7.03 million); The Manchurian Candidate ($6 million); Little Black Book ($3.7 million); I, Robot ($3.58 million); and Spider-Man 2 ($3.4 million). Among the new films that will be competing for box office business this Friday are Benji: Off the Leash!, Exorcist: The Beginning, Without a Paddle, and Walking on Water.
