Theatres were transformed into virtual aquariums over the weekend, as the lively computer-animated feature "Shark Tale" debuted in top spot at the U.S. box office. Featuring a star-studded cast of voice talent, including Will Smith, Robert De Niro and Angelina Jolie, the critically-acclaimed film grossed an estimated $49.1 million. The firefighting drama "Ladder 49," the latest effort from John Travolta, failed to live up to predictions, coming in second place with $22.8 million. The sci-fi thriller "The Forgotten," starring Julianne Moore, slipped from first to third with $12 million. A throwback to serial cliffhangers of years past, "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" was next in line with $3.38 million. The Bernie Mac baseball comedy "Mr. 3000" rounded out the top five with $2.6 million. Rounding out the top ten were: "Woman, Thou Art Loosed" ($2.5 million); "Shaun of the Dead" ($2.43 million); "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" ($2.3 million); "First Daughter" ($2.15 million); "Cellular" ($2.02 million).
