Movies based on video games don't have a great record of success, but that didn't stop Resident Evil: Apocalypse from debuting in top spot at the U.S. box office over the weekend. The horror-thriller, in which a group of survivors attempt to escape a city of the dead, grossed an estimated $23.7 million despite a number of less-than-positive reviews. The intriguing thriller Cellular, starring Chris Evans as a man who receives a call from an unknown woman claiming to be kidnapped, debuted in second place with $10.6 million. Finishing third with $4.58 million was the surprisingly successful camping comedy Without A Paddle. Jet Li's latest martial arts outing, Hero, brought in $4.42 million, while The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement continued its strong run in fifth with $2.93 million. Rounding out the top ten were: Anacondas: The Hunt For The Blood Orchid ($2.9 million); Vanity Fair ($2.75 million); Collateral ($2.7 million); Napoleon Dynamite ($2.65 million); and Paparazzi ($2.6 million).
