Who says North American audiences won't watch foreign films? The Asian martial arts blockbuster Hero continued its prosperous ways over the weekend, debuting in top spot at the U.S. box office. The critically-acclaimed Jet Li vehicle, first released overseas in 2002 as Ying Xiong, brought in an estimated $17.8 million. That was good enough to beat out horror-thriller Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid, which opened in second place with $13.2 million. The camping comedy Without a Paddle hung onto third with $8.7 million, followed closely by The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement at $8.07 million. The Exorcist: The Beginning, which was last weekend's champ, slipped to fifth with $6.74 million. Rounding out the top ten were: Collateral ($6.3 million); Open Water ($5 million); Alien Vs. Predator ($4.8 million); The Bourne Supremacy ($4.6 million); and Suspect Zero ($3.4 million). Challenging for box office supremacy this Friday will be The Cookout, Paparazzi and Come Away Home. Opening in select cities is Bush's Brain, a documentary examining the influence of political advisor Karl Rove on President George W. Bush.
