The Border Explorers Snowmobile Club is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the enhancement of safe snowmobiling opportunities in the Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach areas. Currently, the Club grooms and signs over 200 kilometers of designated trails (ie. trails which require a Trail Pass in order to ride them) linking us to Bakers Narrows, Wanless, The Pas and Denare Beach. These are groomed using a completely refurbished Bombardier SV252 with an 8' Mogul Master trail groomer, operated by a paid employee and helper. There are also well-established trails to Cranberry Portage, Fiddlers, Snow Lake and some remote trails leading to Cumberland House and Nipawin. The purchase, maintenance and operating cost of the groomer along with trail signage and other operating expenses average $25,000 to $30,000 a year. This money is raised through the sale of Manitoba and Saskatchewan trail passes (approximately 300/year), our local snowmobile raffle, smaller fundraisers, and donations by businesses and families. With the help of a monetary grant from Polaris, and additional funds raised by the Club, we have donated a 'rescue boggan' and trailer which is stationed in the ambulance garage of the Flin Flon General Hospital. This is available to assist with any remote winter accident, whether snowmobile related or not. Currently, the Club is lobbying Saskatchewan government departments and land users that would benefit from the development of a signed and groomed trail to Nipawin. It is hoped that approval for this route will be forthcoming shortly, and that work can proceed this season. In March 2005, the Club will be hosting the 2005 Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association Rally. Although this is the yearly provincial get together for Saskatchewan snowmobilers, Manitoba riders will also be invited in order to strengthen the bond between snowmobilers from both provinces. This could attract several hundred riders to our area, generating significant economic spin off for local businesses. The Club has a membership of 60-80 per year and we meet the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the Cambrian Room of the Victoria Inn starting in October and running through April. New members are always welcome. Club activities include organized group rides to designated locations, work bees, ticket selling, supper meetings, hosting an Open House, wiener roasts, poker derbies, snowmobile drag races, safety clinics and Operation Red Nose. Club members also get together in smaller informal groups for more adventuresome and exploratory rides to more remote areas. There is even a 'hot-stove' group of more senior or retired members. If you are a snowmobiler who enjoys the comfort and safety of groomed trails, or is interested in any of the other activities of the Border Explorers Snowmobile Club, please consider becoming a member. The Club looks forward to your involvement. Annual club membership fee is $15 per family, plus the purchase of the appropriate provincial Trail Pass. Manitoba Sno-Passes are $60 prior to December 1 and $90 thereafter. Saskatchewan Trail Permits are $55 before December 1 and $65 thereafter. The provinces have a reciprocal agreement which allows you to ride in both provinces when you display either a Manitoba or Saskatchewan pass. Please Ride Safe & Ride Sober
