Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, last week unveiled northern Manitoba projects that enjoyed support from the Government of Canada’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund.

Nearly $220,000 has gone into eight projects in six northern communities, including:

• $10,249 to the City of Flin Flon, which has renovated the Camp Whitney mess hall. Upgrades included LED lighting, replaced flooring and an additional propane heater.

• $46,200 to the Cranberry Portage Heritage Museum, which has restored the former railway station as a museum site. Repairs include new insulation, installation of a geothermal                          heating / cooling unit, replacing the roof, repairing windows and painting.

• $30,300 to the Town of Snow Lake, which has upgraded the heating and air conditioning system of the Lawrie Marsh Community Hall. The upgrade has boosted energy efficiency and provided the community with an improved facility for a variety of events.

Funding also went to the Sam Waller Museum in The Pas ($54,337 for building improvements); Norway House Cree Nation ($50,300 for upgrading communication masts); Thompson Toddlers Day Care ($13,619 for building improvements); Thompson Boys and Girls Club ($9,240 for building improvements); and Thompson Humane Society ($3,136 for shelter upgrades).

“By making these investments in local infrastructure, we are creating a strong and sustainable economy benefiting northerners and all Manitobans,” said Rempel in a news release.

In its Economic Action Plan 2012, the federal government announced support of $150 million over two years to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure.
