The new edition of the Flin Flon Bombers debuted at the Whitney Forum in a weekend of exhibition action that began with letdown but ended on promise. After bowing out 2-1 to the La Ronge Ice Wolves in a closely-fought match Saturday, the Maroon and White stormed back with a 9-2 blowout of the rival OCN Blizzard Sunday. "There are some guys out there with a lot of talent," said Tom Therien, Flin Flon city councillor and avid Bomber booster. "I'm kind of hoping some of these rookies push these veterans to make them produce a little bit more. I think all of the spots are going to be earned this year, and that doesn't hurt." The explosion against OCN came despite the fact the Bombers were outshot 47-28. Goalies Denny Stephen (23 saves on 23 shots) and Michael Pilote (22/24) left the Blizzard frustrated. Leading the way against OCN with one goal and three assists was Blake Rouston. Chipping in with three points each were Carter Chomyn, Mike Mikinna and Quinn McIntosh. Also lighting up the lamp were Ryan Cosgrove, Quinn McIntosh, Bradey Fidierchuk, David Enns and Tyler Beauvell. The lone goal versus La Ronge came off the stick of Mike Mikkinna, with Bradey Fidierchuk and Tyler Beachell getting assists. The Bombers outshot the Ice Wolves 43-29 and held onto a 1-0 lead until early in the third period when, in a span of less than five minutes, La Ronge came up with two markers and didn't look back on their way to victory. Minding the Bomber net were Robert Moore (9/9) and Denny Stephen (18/20). The home side's sin bin was a busy place, with the Bombers serving a combined 205 minutes in penalties during both games. Of course the Bomber team that had fans at the Forum roaring Sunday consisted of young men hungry for regular roster spots. Will they continue such a strong effort in the regular season? Fans will start finding out when the Bombers open their season at home on Friday, Sept. 17, versus La Ronge.
