The Flin Flon Bombers have that little x next to their name in the SJHL standings.
Flin Flon continued their winning ways on Feb. 4, defeating the Yorkton Terriers 4-3. The Bombers scored in each period, getting goals from four players in the victory, and extended their win streak to four games.
The win locks Flin Flon into the SJHL playoffs and, more importantly, helps cement their place in the standings. Their 67 points put them 11 ahead of third place Yorkton. They are unable to be caught by the current ninth place team in the SJHL, the Kindersley Klippers.
Mason Martin continued his strong offensive year, opening the scoring with his 14th goal of the season. The defenseman had only five goals in his SJHL career before this season. Matt Raymond made it 2-0 for Flin Flon before the first period ended.
The Terriers would respond in the second, lead by Chantz Petruic. Petruic notched his 100th point of the season when he helped set up Alec Zawatsky's powerplay goal. Later in the period he would reach 101 points, scoring goal number 54. Petruic's 101 points has him all but locked in as the season leader. He is 22 points ahead of second place Alec Malo.
The top rookie scorer in the SJHL responded for the Bombers. Tristan Lemyre tallied goal 23 on the season inbetween the Yorkton markers. He leads all rookies with 48 points, five more than La Ronge's Kyle Ford, who is in second place despite playing in 15 more games this season.
With a Terrier in the penalty box Cole Rafuse, the third-highest SJHL scorer, put the nail in Yorkton's coffin. The Bombers are deadly with the man advantage, scoring on 30 per cent of their oppertunities. Rafuse has 13 powerplay goals for Flin Flon this season.
A late comeback attempt from Yorkton fell short, despite a Jordan Guiney goal - with another assist for Petruic. Guiney scored with only 12 seconds to go in the game.
Cal Schell picked up his third win as a Bomber, making 44 saves in the victory. The mid-season acquisition has performed well in his limited action so far in the maroon and white, with a perfect 3-0 record.
Jacob Delorme will likely get the start in net for Flin Flon tomorrow, when they take on the Melville Millionaires in the second game of a five-game road trip. The Bombers will be back in action at the Whitney Forum on Feb. 14, when they take on the league leading Battlefords North Stars.
