It took less than five days for Flin Flon’s newest cultural phenomenon to sell out in an effort to raise funds for the new emergency room.

Dr. Chaitasi Intwala took centre stage last Thursday evening, Sept. 25, as she and more than a dozen other dancers performed Bollywood-inspired numbers for a crowd at the RH Channing Auditorium.

Originally from India, Dr. Intwala took the opportunity to bring a piece of her culture to Flin Flon. It was well received as more than 500 people, including volunteers, took in the performance.

“I think it was wonderful,” Dr. Intwala said after the event. “I think the crowd was so encouraging.”

The evening started with appetizers served by the Flin Flon Bombers, with tastes of authentic Indian cuisine on the menu. Plates with samosas, tandoori chicken and yellow curried chicken were delivered to the 50 tables of eight.

Dr. Intwala started the dancing as she performed a solo called Kathak. A group of six girls followed as they performed traditional Indian dance moves mixed with some hip-hop for their routine, Radha on the Dance Floor.

Dancers along with staff members of the Flin Flon General Hospital, performed with Dr. Intwala in two numbers, Ajanchle and Rajasthani Ghummer.

The Bombers put their own flair into the show as they joined Dr. Intwala on stage for Batameez Dil.

But it wasn’t just Indian culture being celebrated as the Nemihitowok Hoop Troupe performed with their 10-hoop dancers as well as their five-hoop and 30-hoop dancers.

Local musicians CC Trubiak, Mark Kolt, Susan Lethbridge, Brent Lethbridge and Chad Pabianek performed throughout the evening.

Along with the dances and musicians, the dancers put on a fashion show that included traditional Indian attire as well as local
offerings.

Participating in Thursday’s dances were: Drew and Corey Rideout; Nevada and Blake Shirran; Ariel Tanchak; Amasha Epa; Carrie Lyhkun; Breanne Ballard; Joe-joe Pascual; Casey Ranks; Rhea Highland; Eileen Pawliuk; Sara Lawrence; Melanie Erickson; Mari Lawrence; Jelisa Wiegers; Thena Vjay; Crystal Mote; Samantha Epa; Tyson Empey; Parker Evans-Campbell; Dean Allison; Seamus Maguire; Robbie Cameron; and Austin Evans.
