Jonathon Naylor Editor The Flin Flon School Board hopes to level the playing field for smaller schools competing in provincial sports tournaments. Trustees are asking the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association (MHSAA) to stop lumping all of the province's schools into one category for junior varsity championships. Trustee Glenn Smith said 'it's very difficult for rural schools' _ categorized as either A, AA or AAA according to size _ to compete with the large AAAA schools of Winnipeg. The board recently voted to write a letter to the MHSAA in support of having provincial championships in two categories _ AAA and below and AAAA _ as was the case several years ago. Split Such a rural-urban split already exists for Manitoba high school teams competing at the senior varsity level. Trustee Murray Skeavington said that at this year's junior varsity championship, Hapnot Collegiate's boys and girls basketball teams both lost by significant margins to larger schools. 'We're just feeling that it's hard to justify the kids going down and getting beat like that and losing their desire to play the sport,' he said. The board's letter was to be written in support of a letter already penned by Flin Flon teacher Craig McIntosh, who opposes the current junior varsity tournament system.
