Highlights from the latest Creighton School Board meeting, held April 24: Denare Beach Soccer Trustees approved the offering of a recreational soccer program at Denare Beach for Creighton Community School students aged 5-12 years. The program would run during May and June. It would be organized and supervised by Catherine Joa, a teacher at CCS. There will be no cost to participate. The board sees this as an excellent opportunity for Denare Beach children to participate in a recreational soccer program without having to travel. Pre-Kindergarten Programming Maureen Fox, who will be the new pre-kindergarten teacher at CCS this fall, gave trustees an overview of her plans for the upcoming school year. Recently, Fox and two other staff members participated in a 'Learning Through Play' workshop. While attending the workshop they also visited a designated 'site of excellence' for pre-K programming. The board favours Fox's ideas for improving the pre-K program and for engaging parents in the process. To support these plans trustees have allotted up to $10,000 to refurbish the equipment in the program. Drama Production and Trip The CCS Drama Club held its production of 'Northwoods Nonsense' on April 17 and 18. Over 220 people attended and were treated to a variety of appetizing desserts by students and staff. The Drama Club will travel to Winnipeg later this month to participate in workshops provided by the Manitoba Theatre for Young People. Drama Club students have done extensive fundraising to cover their travel expenses. The school board will pay the fees for the full-day workshops. School Community Council Fun Night The School Community Council hosted a Family Fun Night on April 24 with a variety of old-fashioned carnival games held and prizes available. Hot dogs, popcorn, veggie trays and water were available for all attendees. Over 120 students and their parents took part. Trustees commended all members of the School Community Council for their work in organizing the event, and in particular expressed appreciation to Tiffany Ealey, chair of the Council, and Carol Sutherland, community school coordinator.
