Jonathon Naylor Editor The Hapnot Collegiate volleyball team won't be saying "aloha!" after the school board nixed their proposed trip to Hawaii. Trustees voted 6-1 last week to deny the team's request to attend a volleyball event in the sunny U.S. state in October 2012. "Most of the concern was that there was very little volleyball," said Trustee Glenn Smith. "We could see structured volleyball was one afternoon in the whole trip." Smith said there were concerns the trip was "almost identical" to an excursion that would be taken by the Hapnot Travel Club, which, unlike sports teams, is not permitted to fundraise. "If you're going to go in the Travel Club, you have to pay for your own holiday," he said, "and if you're going to go on a volleyball trip...I think we're a bit nervous that there wasn't much school activity involved in it." Only supporter The only supporter of the trip was Trustee Murray Skeavington, who later that evening replaced Smith as board chairperson via acclamation. In another matter at the meeting, Superintendent Blaine Veitch announced the school division has received $35,000 from the province to continue work with the essential skills program. The funding will provide time for teacher Sandra Garinger to work on essential skills, such as writing and numeracy, with junior high and high school students. A half-time life and work exploration teacher will also be hired. Trustees also agreed to further discuss a request to take part in the Flin Flon Bombers' Tickets for Kids program. The division would pay $1,250 to provide free tickets to one Bomber game for every Kindergarten to Grade 12 student in Flin Flon, Creighton, Cranberry Portage and Pelican Narrows. Trustees had no comment on the request, from Tickets for Kids chairperson Dan Reagan, referring it to the Finance Committee for review.
