The Flin Flon School Board discussed money, sports and and student success at their regular meeting Tuesday. Here is a recap: Superintendent Blaine Veitch expressed his gratitude to Pharmasave for donating nearly $6,800 to the schools over the past two years. "That money is well used in the schools," he said. The cash came through the store's Neighbours Helping Neighbours program, which funnels one per cent of sales over $5 to the school of the customer's choice. Veitch welcomed a group of student teachers to the schools, consisting of Jennifer Janzen at Hapnot, Tracy Hovland at Many Faces, Kristy Schwartz at Parkdale, Leslie Ballard at Ruth Betts and Samantha Moore and Patti Korchinski at McIsaac. Each is a student at the BUNTEP teacher education program based in Cranberry Portage. The board voted to purchase a large wreath to be placed at the upcoming Remembrance Day service at the R.H. Channing Auditorium. Chairman Murray Skeavington volunteered to represent the school division at the ceremony. Veitch spoke of the recent RCMP community forum he attended at which citizens and police discussed possible solutions to crime. He noted that vandalism was identified as the top concern, adding that this is an issue the school division has faced. Graffiti and many broken windows are among the incidents of vandalism reported at the schools in recent years. The board reviewed a letter from the Swan Valley School Division that said the availability of school psychologists in Manitoba, particularly outside Winnipeg, has reached "crisis proportions." The letter, which the board received as information, suggested possible remedies, including changing the certification criteria. Copies of the letter have also been sent to the province and other school divisions. It was noted that a number of educational sessions and fire drills took place at the schools during the recent Fire Prevention Week. Veitch commended the Flin Flon firefighters for their leadership throughout the week.
