Flin Flon City Council is helping to take a bite out of crime. Council on Tuesday unanimously voted to donate 10 cents per Flin Flon resident, a total of $626, to the Manitoba Crime Stoppers program. "This is an insurance for us," said Coun. Tom Therien, who made the motion. Annual donations from municipal governments are the major source of funding for Crime Stoppers, which offers cash rewards for information leading to the apprehension of criminals in rural Manitoba. Coun. Therien doesn't believe any tips came to Flin Flon over the past year, but added that it has benefitted the community in the past. "It does help," he said. Council has financially supported the program for years and the councillors agree it pays off. A local crime that was solved thanks to Crime Stoppers was one of the incidents of vandalism to Flinty's Boardwalk in recent years. Between November 2002 and November 2003, police seized over $530,000 in illegal drugs and over $260,000 in stolen property as a result of tips from Crime Stoppers. In the 17 years that the Winnipeg-based program has served rural Manitoba, its tips have led to the seizure of more than $13 million in illegal drugs and stolen property.
