Thanks to the provincial government, a multimillion-dollar major renovation project will be underway next year at the high school in The Pas. Upgrades to Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute will include revamped structural, roofing and mechanical systems. "Our government is investing in infrastructure renewal projects that create an enhanced learning environment for students as well as modernizing the equipment that keeps schools running smoothly," said Education Minister Nancy Allan. "Three renewal projects have been combined to achieve cost efficiencies and they are currently in the design phase." Margaret Barbour serves approximately 463 students in grades nine through 12. The original school was built in 1967 and expanded in 1972 to include space for technical education, a resource room, classrooms and open classroom areas. Work to be completed on the older part of the school includes replacing the exterior brick veneer and outside walls, adding a new roof and insulation on top of the existing roof, general upgrading, waterproofing and insulating the drainage system, and upgrading mechanical systems as required. A new roof and insulation will also be constructed on top of the existing roof on the 1972 section of the building. The project will be tendered early this year and construction is expected to begin in the summer.
