Jonathon Naylor Editor Homeless animals and those who care for them finally have a place to call their own. This past Saturday, Sept. 29, the Flin Flon, Creighton and Area SPCA celebrated the grand opening of its new shelter and headquarters. 'It's just been amazing to watch this group come to this point,' Karen MacKinnon, a city councillor, told the roughly 80 guests on hand. The one-storey steel building, located off the Cliff Lake Road near the old museum site, offers about 1,600 sq. ft. of bright space. At the back is a chain-link-fenced dog kennel with room for roughly 20 canines. Nearby, in a separate room, up to 20 cats can stay in individual cages. Reception The red-cladded building also features a reception area, a kitchen, meeting and waiting rooms, and office space. With two staff and a team of volunteers, it will operate with regular hours to be determined. Built mostly by volunteer labour, the facility has been a goal of the SPCA since the animal-advocacy organization's founding in 2002. Work began on Oct. 1, 2011, almost one year to the day of its opening. The Reminder will have more on the grand opening on Friday.
