Although disappointed with the participation, organizers of the 2003 Big Bike Ride in Flin Flon were pleased with the results. The unique fundraiser, held Friday evening for the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, brought in $1,700. "Any money raised is a great help for the foundation towards its mission of ending heart disease and stroke through research, advocacy and education," said Barb Corden, the foundation's program coordination for Northern Manitoba. Just one team, the Flin Flon Lions Club, took the oversized bicycle for a spin, with each driver having collected pledges. It took the riders about 15 minutes to complete a loop that began and ended at the Flin Flon Community Hall. The Lions raised $1,200 in pledges and Corden also received a $500 donation for the fundraiser. "We hope next year that the people of Flin Flon and Creighton will come out and support the ride," commented Corden. Prior to being trucked to Flin Flon, the Big Bike was in Thompson for a fundraiser. Riders in The Pas enjoyed the bike on Saturday. Up next for the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation will be its door-to-door canvass in February. Anyone wishing to lend a hand may contact Barb at 687-8901 for more information.
