On Wednesday, October 20, about three dozen people turned out to watch the sod turning ceremony for the new Bedrock Manor in Creighton. The ceremony was hosted by Creighton's Mayor Bruce Fidler. "A need was identified and action was taken," commented Mayor Fidler at the event. It is so refreshing to see how the Creighton mayor and council realized the needs of the community and went ahead and got things done. The Town of Creighton donated the land and the water and sewer system for this project, which is located next to the Creighton Trailer Park. Attending the ceremony were Councilor LaVerne Hinzman, Town Administrator Paula Muench, Leslie Wood and Dennis Strom from Creighton Economic Development and Tourism, Trudy Jackson, Roger Parenteau and Dave Dynna from Saskatchewan Housing, Dennis Cleve from Canadian Housing and Mortgage Corporation, Donna Jamieson and Mike Anaka from Creighton Housing, Jack Stevens representing the North/Sask Seniors, Creighton Housing Inspector Roger Poirier, Chuck Miller from Miller Construction in Prince Albert who is the contractor for this building, as well as many of the new tenants who hope to be moving into Bedrock Manor in the summer of 2005. "This sod turning ceremony is just taking place and already, of the twelve units to be rented out, ten are spoken for," said Leslie Wood who is the new manager of Bedrock Manor. Paula Muench commented, "This is so great for Saskatchewan residents who want to remain in the area and in their own province." See 'Affordable' P.# Con't from P.# Roger Parenteau spoke on behalf of the Saskatchewan government (and passed along the regrets of MLA Joan Beatty who was unable to attend but hopes to be at the grand opening). Parenteau mentioned the program called "Home First", which offers safe affordable homes to low to moderate income peoples in Saskatchewan. "The government sets a cap by which people are selected as to who qualifies to get to have a unit," said Parenteau. Concerning the somewhat quaint name that was chosen for the Manor, Chuck Miller of Miller's Construction mentioned he was responsible for the name, saying, "Well, there were many names tossed about, but after all the foundation is bedrock, so what better name?" One wonders if the Flintstones will become a lawn ornament for one or more of the residents! Coffee and cake was served after the ceremony at R.J's lounge. Congratulations to the Town of Creighton, mayor and council in seeing that Creighton is continuing as a progressive community!
