A recent sighting of a black bear roaming the winter landscape outside Flin Flon came as a surprise to Natural Resource Officer Brian Wotton. The report of a bear spotted along the highway between Bakers Narrows and the Paradise Dump came in earlier this month. "It's very unusual. It's not a common thing at all," said Wotton. "It wasn't that warm for bears. The bear shouldn't have been coming out." Wotton believes it's more than likely the bear was disturbed, possibly by snowmobiles or an overflowing stream, which could have sent water into its den. "Bears don't normally come out in the springtime until there is water dripping down in the den," he said. Meanwhile, a local resident recently reported to The Reminder a couple of bear sightings on the Schist Lake Road in late December. Wotton said people often won't report bear sightings to authorities unless the animals are causing a disturbance.
