A new art initiative could make Flin Flon’s Main Street a little more colourful this summer.

Banners with selected pieces by Flin Flon artists will be hung up along Main Street later this spring in hopes of showcasing local work and sprucing up the city’s main drag.

The idea initially came from the Regional Economic Development Committee (REDC), then moved to the Flin Flon economic development committee and the Main Street revitalization subcommittee.

“We want to have digital photos of work by local artists. We want to put them on banners and hang them up and down Main Street,” said city councillor Colleen McKee at council’s March 19 meeting. “We’re hoping to have them up in time for the summer extravaganza.”

The banners will be similar in style to the traditional blue and green Trout Festival banners that have been seen in recent years along Main Street each summer. However, these banners will have more emphasis on the art, along with the place branding logo for the Flin Flon area released by Travel Manitoba last year.

“There’s going to be about 30 to 40 banners,” said Crystal Kolt, a member of the Main Street committee and one of the coordinators of the project.

“They’re going to be long-term banners and they will have the new Flin Flon brand on them as well.”

McKee said the revitalization committee is working hard with a lot of good ideas for Main Street.

“I think that we’re going to see some success,” said McKee.

The banners are planned to be replaced twice a year, with the older ones available for sale after their exhibition. An auction has been proposed to raise money for future projects, but plans have not yet been finalized. Brochures will be available to explain the project and pieces to incoming tourists.

The deadline for art submissions for the project will be April 19, with the banners slated to be put up in the weeks following the deadline. Artists can submit work to [email protected].
