One of Main St.'s popular gathering spots, the Flin Flon Bakery and Coffee Shop, has closed so owner John Wolters can pursue a new career. Wolters, whose family established the business in 1985, wants to leave behind the long hours to become a diamond driller. "I'm happy about it," he said. "I used to come into work at one in the morning and work until three in the afternoon, so now I actually get to sleep in. It's quite the adjustment." Business was starting to dwindle, and Wolters said that also factored into his decision. The entrepreneur is now trying to sell or lease the building and has already heard from a handful of parties, including one interested in turning it into a sports bar. Wolters and his father Sid and sister Anita came to Flin Flon from Winnipeg 19 years ago to open the bakery on the site of the old Flin Flon City Hall. "There was no bakery when we came to town," he recalled. In his new career in diamond drilling, Wolters hopes to continue to live in Flin Flon but said the job may necessitate a move. Wolters was at the bakery yesterday selling off his equipment, including plates and shelves. Mayor Dennis Ballard was disappointed with the news of the closure. "I think it's a business we're going to miss," he said. "I'm going to tell you, those were the best donuts you could get. I think it's too bad, but you know what, that's the way it goes."8/13/2004
