On top of firing blistering slap shots and delivering punishing body checks, some members of the Flin Flon Bombers will lend a helping hand in the classroom this year. Six members of the Maroon and White, as well as assistant coach Dustin Ernest, have been hired as mentors at Flin Flon elementary schools. Superintendent of Schools Blaine Veitch sees several positive consequences to having the athletes involved. He said students often look up to the Bombers and that they provide positive role models for the male students. Superintendent Veitch also feels that the program allows the Bombers to meet some of their biggest fans and feel like a part of their community. As youth mentors, the Bombers will help their respective schools in a variety of ways. Organizing sports programs and other extra-curricular activities are among the duties they will enjoy this year. Veitch noted that because of their busy hockey schedules, the Bomber mentors will work on a more flexible timetable than their counterparts. Three Bombers Ñ Simon McCusker, Derek Blais and Don Milburn Ñ will work at McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac throughout the year. Students at Parkdale School will welcome Tyler Stinton and assistant coach Dustin Ernest, while Spencer Davis and John Iron have been hired on at Ruth Betts School. Meanwhile, Jeff Lapointe has been added to the maintenance staff as part of the mentor program. The Bombers have been involved with the mentor program since its inception in 1999.
