When it comes to youth citizenship in Northern Manitoba, Flin Flon's Brittany Lyons is second to none. The Many Faces Education Centre student has won the Manitoba Association of School Trustees (MAST) Student Citizenship Award for the North, which includes a $500 cash award and a certificate of recognition. "I was so surprised," said the kindly grade 12 student. "I was extremely overwhelmed. I didn't expect this at all." Brittany is one of just six students across the province to be bestowed the award, which was initiated by MAST this year to recognize youth who are involved in their communities. Each of the 37 school divisions across the province was invited to nominate one student. The teen wasn't expecting the winners to be announced this soon, as she only found out she was the Flin Flon nominee a little over two weeks ago. "It was funny because people were still congratulating me on my nomination and I was telling them that I won," said Brittany, who works part-time at Wal-Mart. "They were like, 'Oh really? Wow.'" Brittany was selected based on her strong academic standing and her substantial involvement with different community activities. The honour roll student helped organize a car wash for cancer research in honour of Charlie Mott, a Many Faces teacher who passed away last summer. See 'Active' P.# Con't from P.# She's also worked with disabled youth, helped the Flin Flon, Creighton and Area SPCA, organized youth sports, and is active on her school's graduation committee. To win the award, Brittany was required to write an essay on the importance of citizenship. "The whole school, all the staff and students, are really excited and proud of her," commented Many Faces principal Jane Dupre. Brittany was invited to accept her award in Winnipeg next week but will be unable to attend. A representative of the Flin Flon School Board will accept on her behalf. MAST's Northern Manitoba region consists of the Flin Flon School Division; Kelsey School Division in The Pas; Mystery Lake School Division in Thompson; and Frontier School Division, which consists of nearly 50 schools, including those in Cranberry Portage and Snow Lake.
