It's not a done deal, but A&W expects to open a new restaurant in Flin Flon later this year, a spokesman said yesterday. In a phone interview from his North Vancouver office, Graham Cooke, vice-president of development, said the chain should conclude a real estate deal at the Flintoba Shopping Centre within two weeks. Once that's done, the company will need a franchisee. Cooke said a local man, whom he was not at liberty to name, has applied to own the restaurant and "looks to be a very strong candidate." Cooke said there are at times "all kinds of bumps along the way" in such a process "but right now, we're thinking this is going to be a 2004 restaurant opening." "We would hope to be open for business sometime in the late summer or early fall," he said. Plans for the restaurant have already been drawn up. The 1,760 sq. ft. facility would include room for 54 seats and a drive-thru. The previous A&W in Flin Flon, located on Highway 10A not far from where the Flintoba Shopping Centre now stands, closed in 1999 and became a Chicken Chef Family Restaurant. Since the closure, A&W has looked for new site opportunities in the community but until now had found no preferable locations. When an opportunity at the Flintoba Shopping Centre, now home to three 'big box' stores, came up, the company jumped at the chance.
