2003 August Ð The Cranberry Portage 75th Anniversary Homecoming, held over the long weekend, was a true celebration of community and spirit. "It brought a lot of life back into the community," commented Martin Oulete, a local resident. "To see so many new faces and familiar faces was great." People came to the Homecoming from Flin Flon, The Pas and Snow Lake, as well as distant lands such as Saudi Arabia, New Zealand and California. Organizers estimated up to 3,000 people participated in the event. August 6 Ð Rubble is all that remains of one of Flin Flon's more historic buildings. Over the last few days, workers have demolished the Neil A. McLennan Building, former Ross Lake School, on Adams Street. The facility was first opened in the fall of 1935. August 7 Ð The mother and daughter tandem of Shelby and Kathy Bonazew are this year's winners of the annual Bomber Boat Draw, valued at $14,944. August 11 Ð Two young offenders have admitted shattering some 24 windows at Parkdale School and Hapnot Collegiate last week. August 12 Ð A more modern facility of about the same size will rise from the ashes of the former Hemlock Drive seniors apartment, according to Adrien De Porto of the Manitoba Housing Authority. August 13 Ð The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce, along with the City of Flin Flon, have placed an order for 10,000 Flinty coins. The $3 coins will be legal tender for about 11 months after their expected release this fall. The coin will feature Flinty on one side and the City shield on the other. The Chamber anticipates making several thousand dollars on the coins, from people who choose to keep the coins as collector's items instead of returning them to a bank after the 11 months expire. August 18 Ð A spokesperson for Mark's Work Warehouse told The Reminder that the clothing giant is "definitely exploring some opportunities" in Flin Flon. Ð Interest in the rich history of Denare beach brought some 80 curious people to the Northern Gateway Museum's Discovery Day Open House held yesterday. Some of the exhibits include books and a desk from the defunct Denare Beach School, Aboriginal birch bark bitings, and replicas of pots brought by settlers to Amisk Lake in the early 1900s. August 22 Ð Since being hired as assistant director of works and operations for the City in 2002, Rick Bacon has spent a lot of time on a problem that has plagued the community for years Ð derelict houses. So far, he has overseen the demolishing of 20 houses. "This is going to be an ongoing job for the next number of years," he said. August 28 Ð The Chamber of Commerce is proposing to have lines painted in certain areas to mark the border between Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The lines would allow visitors to have their pictures taken while straddling the two provinces.
