The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce discussed a hodgepodge of topics at their general meeting Tuesday. Highlights of the meeting, held at the Friendship Centre Restaurant and attended by 15 people: It was reported that the chamber's Radio Auction fundraiser, held this past Saturday, Oct. 5, grossed $8,794 before expenses. Suggestions were made on how to improve the event, including increasing the minimum amount by which bids can increase. The current amount is $1. President Kory Eastman noted that the search for a new chamber secretary will continue. The chamber did have a promising candidate lined up, but she accepted a better offer from a current employer. Advertising will begin to find other good candidates willing to work 15 to 20 hours a week. The new application deadline is Oct. 18. The chamber's last secretary, Tersia de Jager, resigned because she was moving to B.C. It was announced that this year's Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Pioneer Square has been tentatively set for Nov. 14. Also scheduled is the Santa Claus Parade of Lights down Main Street, set for Nov. 22. Dec. 6 will mark the start of a Christmas shopping weekend promotion. It was noted that the chamber's next general meeting, on Oct. 22, will feature Bob Smith as the guest speaker. Smith, director of education for the Creighton School Division, will discuss Creighton Community School's employment skills program. The date for the chamber's annual general meeting was confirmed: Nov. 12 at noon at the Friendship Centre Restaurant. At that time, former mayor Tom Therien will be sworn in as the new president following Eastman's energetic two-year term.
