Churchill-Keewatinook Aski MP Niki Ashton isn’t saying whether she wants Tom Mulcair to stay on as leader of the federal New Democrats.

Mulcair faces a leadership review next month. The Canadian Press reports that Ashton declined to tell a news conference this week whether she backs him.

As CP put it: “Ashton replied that she preferred to talk about being proud to belong to a party that encourages the exchange of ideas.”

Some within the NDP, including at least three former MPs, believe the party has lost its way under Mulcair.

Under him, the NDP fell to 44 seats in the 2015 election. In the previous election, in 2011, the party won a record 103 seats under the late Jack Layton.

Mulcair defeated Ashton and five other candidates to secure the party leadership in 2012.
