Jonathon Naylor Editor A Flin Flon junior high student eclipsed more than three dozen other young artists to have his work appear on the next Manitoba Youth Angling Card. As The Reminder recently reported, Anthony Francois' watercolour painting of a rainbow trout will be featured on the 2012-13 edition of the card. Katherine Ward, recreational fishing program manager for Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship, said Anthony's was one of 40 entries from across the province. 'Anthony is the first winner from northern Manitoba,' she said. Ward added that the Ecole McIsaac School eighth-grader's art and name will appear on the 50,000 cards to be distributed throughout Manitoba prior to the fishing season. The Manitoba Youth Angling Card is produced by Fish Futures Inc., a not-for-profit corporation based in Winnipeg. Though not legally required, the card is given out free to anglers under the age of 16 to help promote the benefits of recreational fishing to youth. Anthony's painting, which depicts a trout swimming at the bottom of a lake near a tree, will blanket the front of the card. The soft-spoken received not only this provincial recognition, but also a complimentary fishing rod and a $200 cheque. He planned to spend the money on a video camera to pursue his love of 'freerunning' _ an art form that involves running and performing physical stunts while a camera records the freerunner's point of view.
