Flin Flon army cadets have been recognized for giving back to their community with a prestigious citizenship award. The 2328 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps was chosen over the 14 other corps in the Manitoba and northwestern Ontario region for the inaugural Sen. Molgat Award. "The community has been so supportive of our program that it's important the young people return what's been given to them," said Cpt. Bill McLean. "We're as proud of our community as they are of us." A group of cadets accepted the award, named after the late Gildas Molgat, former Speaker of the Canadian Senate and a strong supporter of the army cadet movement, in Winnipeg over the weekend. It consists of a plaque, which the corps will keep, and an engraved snow axe once presented to Sen. Molgat to honour his contributions to army cadets. The axe will be kept by the winning corps for one year. The cadets won the award by taking part in a handful of community projects over the past two years. That includes honouring late veterans by placing small Canadian flags at their grave sites and revamping a walking bridge near McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac. The cadets have also taken part in highway cleanups and spread limestone as part of the Green Project environmental renewal initiative, among other undertakings. "We're committed to doing a minimum of two citizenship projects each year," noted Cpt. McLean. To be eligible for the award, one of the cadets had to put together a presentation on the corps' community involvement. Cpt. McLean commended Warrant Officer Justin Cowan for his work. Cpt. McLean said citizenship promotion is a key mandate of the army cadet program. "This award indicates that we're doing quite well in that aspect," he said. "I'm very pleased. It's important that we teach the young people citizenship." Young people interested in joining cadets may phone 687-3669 for more information, or stop by 5 Timber Lane any Wednesday evening.
