Flin Flon's 2328 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps is all set to begin a new year full of challenges and activities. Operating out of the Major Ben Grimmelt Army Cadet Training Centre at 5 Timber Lane in the Flin Flon industrial park, the corps begins another year on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. Parades take place every Wednesday evening thereafter throughout the year. Many of the local cadets are just returning from summer camps from various parts of Canada such as Vernon, B.C.; Penhold, Alberta; and Banff, Alberta. The aim of the army cadet movement is to promote citizenship, physical fitness, and leadership, as well as service to community and country. Plans for the upcoming year include a trip to Winnipeg for a sports tournament, swim parades at the Flin Flon Aqua Centre, organized sports, field craft, bush survival, winter camping, map using, target shooting as well as other related subjects. A highlight of the year's training plan will be courses on hunter safety and snowmobile safety, as well as safe boating. Training will continue until the spring of 2005, at which time cadets will have the opportunity to apply for summer camps. The corps takes pride in our local area by participating in community projects such as refurbishing the Cenotaph war memorial, repairs to the Lakeside Bridge and a significant contribution to the Green Project ? limestone-spreading to promote environmental improvement. Our 125th Anniversary Project this year consisted of honouring local area veterans by placing Canadian flags at local cemeteries. New and exciting projects are planned for the upcoming year. See 'Organization' P.# Con't from P.# Our organization encourages cadets to do their best at school and offers a generous bursary at the Hapnot and Many Faces institutes for graduating students. The corps is trained and administered by qualified instructors of the Cadet Instructor Cadre, and civilian instructors under the command of the Cadet Detachment in Winnipeg. Parents and interested local citizens may also become involved with the Civilian Sponsoring Group and Parent Committee. Young people aged 12 years and up and who are interested in experiencing the challenge of the army cadet program are invited to drop in any Wednesday evening (starting September 8) or call 687-4936.
