The Flin Flon Aqua Centre has some problems but is in no way unsafe, a City official said yesterday in response to concerns about the recreational facility. "We have no evidence to back up that it would be unsafe to be in the building. If it was, we'd shut it down," said Director of Works and Operations Kevin Komarnicki. "Structurally, it's safe." A Reminder article on the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce meeting last week left some residents concerned about the safety of the building. At the meeting, Ron Watt, chairman of the proposed Communityplex project, said the Aqua Centre is "a very limited life facility" and that "it's virtually week to week right now whether that building can continue." Komarnicki reiterated yesterday that he does not agree with the "week to week" assessment. "It's not week to week as far as safety goes, but as far as the building envelope (the shell of the pool facility) goes and maintaining the proper temperature and humidity in there, it's shot," he said. See 'Assessment' P.# Con't from P.# Komarnicki presented The Reminder with his assessment of the Aqua Centre, which stated that: the foundation, slabs on grade, and pool basin appear to be stable; the super structure and envelope of the auxiliary building (the portion of the building not surrounding the pool itself) appear stable, but have technical shortcomings. the super structure and envelope of the pool building require extensive repair and replacement. steel columns and girts are rusted due to the migration of moisture-laiden air into the wall system, causing water to move down columns and walls, collecting on the girts. The proposed Communityplex being headed by Watt would combine several recreational services, including a swimming pool, under one roof.
