Frontier Collegiate Institute held their annual Christmas Concert and Feast on Tuesday, December 16 in the gymnasium. There were approximately 350 people in attendance. It was certainly a time to join together in the festive Christmas spirit to enjoy a lovely supper and to watch various student performances. Mr. McMillan was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening events. Mr. Taylor, the Principal, began the evening with his opening remarks. He welcomed everyone to the concert and indicated that this was an opportunity for our students to show their unique gifts. Mr. Hay, the Support Worker at the school, said the grace. Mr. McMillan drew cards as a way to identify which individuals could line up and receive their supper. The cafeteria staff members and many of the guests prepared food for the feast. The variety of food was enjoyed. As partners in learning, we enjoyed a delicious meal. Santa Claus and his elves dropped in to give out mandarin oranges, candy canes, and Christmas greetings. With great anticipation we prepared ourselves for an evening of fine entertainment. The 25G music students under the direction of Mrs. Petryk began the evening program by playing "Drummer Boy". This was followed by FCI Rocks rendition of the song "Blurry", featuring the voice of Errol Monias. Mickey Mason played "Jingle Bells" on the keyboard. Students from Ms. Anderson's jazz dance class performed to the song "Crazy in Love". Following this active performance, Olivia Caribou did a "Fancy Shawl" dance. The audience applauded immensely for this Sr. 4 student. FCI Rocks performed the song "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", with Colleen Brass as the vocalist. A square dance group consisting of students from Ilford, Moose Lake, and Pukatawagan demonstrated their seasoned jigging ability. FCI Rocks made their third appearance of the evening with Dieter Caribou singing "It's been a while and One thing". The next item on the program was a Residence Council Raffle Draw. Ms. Mary Fullerton called up all the members of the council and members from the audience were selected to draw the winning tickets. The 20G music students played "Silent Night". Students picked their guitars and tapped the ivory on their keyboards to a delightful rendition of this Christmas carol. The final performance, "Happy Christmas", was a collaborative effort featuring a residence counsellor, a teacher, and four students. Mr. Kevin Kapay and Ms. Eunice Lavell were on lead vocals, with Jacqui Law and Nadia Green as back-up singers. Clarke Campbell played bass guitar and Eric George was on drums. The performances were excellent. The students who shared their gifts with us this evening are certainly more valuable than the gifts that can be purchased in any store. It is up to us as educators and parents to ensure that young people acquire more gifts so they can become proud and independent citizens. Happy New Year everyone!
