Mark your calendars: join the Flin Flon/ Creighton and Area SPCA in celebrating Be Kind to Animals Week from May 2 to 8, 2004! For the first time ever, animal shelters and whole communities from across the country are uniting to dedicate this week to Canada's furry, feathered and finned friends. "Be Kind to Animals Week is a time when we can take a step back and think of how we can all be kind to animals," says Debbie Hiebert, president. "It gives all of us a chance to think of the importance of the animals in our lives, and the responsibility of caring for them." In honour of Be Kind to Animals Week, the Flin Flon/Creighton and Area SPCA is asking local residents to show extra appreciation for the animals around them: Spend more quality time with your companion animals Volunteer as a dog walker or foster home If thinking about a new animal, consider adopting from a shelter: most have a large selection of cats and dogs. Be a responsible pet owner: keep your cat indoors, respect leash laws, stoop and scoop, and take your pet to the vet regularly. Speak up for animals: teach others around you what they can do to help animals, and participate in Be Kind to Animals Week! Be Kind to Animals Week will feature: Sunday, May 2, noon - 4:00 p.m., SPCA booth located at Canadian Tire. Cats and dogs up for adoption will be on display. "We are very excited to partner with the IAMS Company and shelters from coast to coast to launch this first, national Be Kind to Animals Week," says Bob Van Tongerloo, CEO of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies. "We believe this event will help teach the younger generation about animal welfare and will educate entire communities about the wild and domestic animals around us." Be Kind to Animals Week was originally launched by the American Humane Association in 1915, and has been celebrated in a small number of communities across Canada over the past years. This year marks the first time that animal shelters and municipalities from coast to coast will participate in a national event to promote humane education and respect for animals. Be Kind to Animals Week 2004 is a project of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, the national organization representing humane societies and SPCAs from across Canada, and is made possible thanks to generous support from the IAMS Company and local animal shelters.
