A push to help area businesses thrive in the face of online and outside competition will launch early next year. The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce is spearheading a 'shop local' print and radio advertising campaign for its members. 'It's basically to promote the businesses and highlight the businesses that are supporting the local chamber,' said president Kory Eastman. Eastman said the goal is to 'encourage people to choose local shopping over many of the other options they have,' including driving to major centres like Saskatoon or visiting websites such as Amazon.com. All paid chamber members will be listed in a professionally produced business directory to be distributed in The Reminder. They will also be mentioned in shop-local-themed ads on CFAR. Businesses will enjoy this advertising as part of their normal chamber membership fees. Those who pay an extra $15 will get more prominent advertising. Revenue from all $15 fees will go directly to the chamber to help cover operating costs and special projects. The Reminder has agreed to produce and distribute the business directory at no cost to the chamber. Similarly, CFAR will not charge for its shop local ads. But both media outlets will seek additional advertising to help offset the expense of offering this service to the chamber. The chamber executive approved the new campaign at their meeting Tuesday, hoping to have the directory ready for distribution, and the radio ads ready to air, by the end of January. The campaign is to run on an annual basis. Eastman said the directory will be used to promote not only chamber members, but also the benefits of chamber membership. It will also help ensure the public knows what the chamber does for the community, he said. The campaign will further encourage chamber members to pay their dues on time, as those who miss payment cannot be included in the directory or in the radio ads.
