Jonathon Naylor Editor At an age when many in the sport have hung up their paddles, canoe racer Jessie Campbell looks like she's just getting started. With upper body strength that belies her 59 years, the Flin Flon woman was again in fine form at the canoe races held on Ross Lake during the recent Trout Festival. 'I really like racing,' says Campbell, who placed in two races. 'It's challenging and it's a good sport and good exercise and fun.' Campbell and the Trout Festival canoe races go way back. She and teammate Linda Buck won the first women's race held back in the 1980s. Their prize? One-hundred silver dollars. Campbell did not compete in the Trout Festival again until two years ago, but she had hardly left canoe racing behind. On the contrary, she and sister Annabelle Campbell spent 15 years taking part in long-distance canoe races throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Originally from Moose Lake, Jessie began canoeing in her early 20s and has no plans on abandoning the sport. At this year's Trout Festival, she and Flora Staple took top spot in the Ladies' Open. Partnered with Dean Grove, Jessie also took third place in the Mixed Open.
