Accidents, stuck vehicles as winter suddenly rears its head

Old Man Winter wasted no time making his presence felt.

The first snowfall of the year overnight Tuesday and throughout Wednesday saw Flin Flon RCMP respond to four vehicle-related incidents.

Two trucks slid into each other at the Hudson Street and Terrace Avenue intersection.

Elsewhere, a vehicle struck a sign because the driver was unable to stop as he approached his residence.

As often happens after snowfall, a vehicle was unable to make the climb from Third Avenue onto Ross Street. Police attended and directed traffic while the vehicle backed down the hill.

Meanwhile, a school bus got stuck at Ross Street and Fourth Avenue. City crews attended, clearing snow and sanding the area.

Other incidents weren’t reported to police but required help from snow-clearing equipment and tow trucks.

Along the Perimeter Highway, for instance, ore trucks were seen along the side of the road, unable to proceed through the thick blanket of snow.

At the highways 10 and 10A intersection, a Canadian Tire semi became temporarily stuck after the driver was unable to complete a turn onto 10A.

Motorists across the border seemed to have better luck. Creighton RCMP reported no calls for service related to the snowfall, as of Thursday morning.

Back in Flin Flon, RCMP Cpl. Stacy Wiens encouraged motorists to drive according to weather conditions.

He said drivers planning a road trip should carry a winter survival kit, tell someone when they are leaving and when they are expected to arrive, and continually check for updated road and weather conditions.

Creighton RCMP remind motorists to keep their windshield, hood and licence plate clear of snow or risk formal charges. SGI has requested a crackdown on those issues.

Environment Canada data from the Flin Flon Municipal Airport showed a combined 30 centimeters of snow fell on the area overnight Tuesday and Wednesday.
