A three-vehicle highway collision Friday evening at Bakers Narrows sent 11 people to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. According to police, the accident occurred at about 8:20 p.m. when a northbound van lost control, hit a southbound SUV and was then struck by a second oncoming vehicle. Vehicles from Denare Beach, Cranberry Portage and Pukatawagan were involved in the collision, for which the icy road conditions were a factor. Firefighters from Flin Flon used the Jaws of Life to remove two occupants from the vehicles, which collided just south of Bakers Narrows Lodge. Ambulance crews transported eleven injured occupants to the Flin Flon General Hospital. Two of them were flown to Winnipeg to receive care. Rain and snow earlier in the day turned the highway dangerously slick when the temperature cooled in the evening. The Department of Highways was immediately dispatched and sanded the highway from Cranberry Portage to Flin Flon. Police remind the public that speed limits are set on roadways for the best possible road conditions, and that the curves and hills in the Flin Flon-Cranberry Portage area can be challenging to drive at the best of times. "It is imperative that drivers greatly reduce their speeds when roads are wet or slippery to avoid losing control," read an RCMP press release. With the highway blocked off for some three hours, staff at Bakers Narrows Lodge served free coffee to the stranded motorists. Cpl. Doug Ashton of the Cranberry Portage RCMP expressed his appreciation to the lodge staff for their hospitality. Friday's collision occurred on the same segment of Highway 10 where a recent accident resulted in two fatalities.
