Two teenage girls perished and a third suffered serious injuries Saturday night after a single vehicle accident near the intersection of Green Street and the Perimeter Highway. Flin Flon RCMP found the ravaged car, which they said had hit a rock embankment, about 70 feet from the road yesterday morning. Police suspected that speed may have been a major factor in the accident but said the matter is still under investigation. Police did not release the names of the victims yesterday, as it was not clear that all of the next of kin had been notified. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove two of the victims, police said. The surviving youth was taken to Flin Flon General Hospital with serious injuries, they said. Based on witness accounts, police believe the accident occurred between 11:30 p.m. and midnight Saturday. The girls, all under 18, had been reported missing, and police spent hours searching for them until the obscured accident scene was discovered. Photos and measurements from the scene will be reviewed by an RCMP traffic analyst. Police said they will have a better understanding of the accident once the analysis is complete. The investigation is ongoing.
