NDP MP Bev Desjarlais has called on the government to reverse its decision to impose a new tax on Aboriginal students. "This new claw-back tax on student funding is just one more barrier to Aboriginal students trying to further their education," said Desjarlais. She added that the Liberals keep promising to help more Aboriginal people succeed in school, but that promise is hard to believe when they choose to implement policies like this one. Adding to the growing scandal, Monday's Auditor General Report heavily criticized the Government for failing to live up to its commitments to Aboriginal students. The report revealed that Indian and Northern Affairs Canada has made little progress in recent years and that the number of post-secondary students helped by the department has actually been on the decline. "According to the latest report, it is going to take Aboriginal high school students 28 years to match non-native graduation rates," Desjarlais pointed out. "The Liberals are completely failing Canadian aboriginal students."
