Staff and volunteers with the Flin Flon Recycling Centre met Monday to review what was a most eventful year for the program. About 14 people attended the annual general meeting of the Flin Flon and District Environment Council, which operates the recycling centre, at Flin Flon City Hall. "It has been a banner year for recycling this past year," said centre administrator Doreen Murray. Murray's annual report noted that Flin Flonners salvaged more paper, soda cans and other recyclables in 2003 than ever before. The record-breaking year saw the centre process 337 tonnes of material, a 13 per cent increase over the previous record year of 2002. Murray estimated that about three-quarters of the increase came from cardboard collected through the growing business pickup program. The remainder, she judged, came from the residential curbside pickup program of recyclables, which began last February. It was decided at the meeting that the council's executive will remain unchanged, with Deb Odegaard staying on as chairperson, Greg East as vice-chairperson, and Janet Modler as secretary. The rest of the executive consists of members Jewell Robertson and Angela Simpson, Flin Flon City Council representative Bill Hanson, and treasurer Fran Gira. During the meeting, volunteers who lent a hand during 2003 were presented with certificates of appreciation. They were: Bob Fortier; Daryl Nomeland; Rita Smith; George Smith; Jewell Robertson; Graham and Grace Craig; Ric Burman; Wayne Freund; Justine Freund; and Dan Devlin. "They've just been invaluable," said Murray of the volunteers. "Without them, I don't know what we would have done." Highlights for the recycling centre from 2003 include: The introduction of the curbside pickups of recyclables across Flin Flon. The purchase of a cube van to be used for the curbside program. See 'Hours' P.# Con't from P.# Environmental presentations given to the Read to Me literacy program; the McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac Parent Council; a high school science class; and at a Healthy Flin Flon meeting. Volunteer hours were up over 2002 with a total of 3,717. Tours of the recycling centre by children and staff from the Summer in the Parks and Aboriginal Headstart programs. Continued work to Nicole Jackson's Memorial Garden, located behind the centre. The garden was established in memory of a volunteer who will always hold a special place in the hearts of the centre's staff and volunteers.
