Marook with Police Dog Services tracks a man and child in dense bush.

When a man threatened residents and ran to the woods with a baby, Marook was called in to find them.

On April 18, at approximately 2:35 p.m., Winnipegosis RCMP received a report that a male had threatened to use a firearm on residents of a home and then fled the residence with an infant. It was unknown if the male had access to a firearm; he was known to the residents.

A short time later, RCMP located the vehicle he was travelling in, and officers saw the him leave the vehicle and flee on foot into the bush with the infant, who was not dressed for the sub-zero temperatures.

RCMP Police Dog Services was called in, and Police Service Dog Marook started a track. After a search of approximately two kilometres through a heavily treed area, Marook and his handler located the man and the infant.

The man was taken into custody. The infant appeared unharmed, and was handed over to Emergency Medical Services once officers hiked out of the bush. It was determined the young child was not physically injured.

The 26-year-old man was not in possession of a firearm. He was charged with flight from peace officer, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, and two counts of uttering threats against a person. He remains in custody.
