This year’s main local construction project led to the City of Flin Flon digging deep in more ways than one.

The City of Flin Flon started a multi-million dollar update of its water and sewer infrastructure through its “utility six critical assets” program this year, including changes to the Grandview Street water tower, lift station, reservoir, two heating plants and other areas of town. The cost of the project for 2019 was eyeballed at just under $3 million in this year’s city budget, with the overall cost of the project to completion set at around $6 million. A proposed change to water and sewer rates will include increases for the next three years to help offset costs of the project.

The project included closing part of Ross Street at the bottom of Sipple Hill. The road closure, originally supposed to last for only a matter of weeks, stretched from early August to Nov. 7. The closure went months overtime, led to a water shutoff and a days-long precautionary boil water advisory, but the City has stated the project is on budget and will continue next summer.
