Northern Manitoba was under a national microscope in July as a manhunt for a pair of suspected murderers from British Columbia was centred in the region.
Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky, wanted in connection to the deaths of three people in northern B.C., were alleged to have fled east and arrived in northern Manitoba. A vehicle connected with the pair was found burned on the side of the road near Gillam.
After several false alarms and social media misfires, including a brief scare involving a burned car near Flin Flon, the search ended with the pair being located dead near the shore of the Nelson River Aug. 7. In a video recorded on a stolen camera, the two killers admitted their crimes – statements that ballistics testing on the pair’s guns later confirmed.
