After years of fundraising and discussion, moves to build a replacement to the Flin Flon Aqua Centre jumped into high gear in 2019. In September, Flin Flon city council announced they would dedicate just shy of $2.4 million in city funding to build a new pool complex, similar to recently built facilities in Kindersley and Melfort. Councillors were banking on receiving federal and provincial infrastructure grants totalling over $6 million to help get the facility built. The new facility will be used as a replacement of the existing Aqua Centre, instead of renovating the existing building.
The current pool, opened to the public in 1970, was closed not once but twice during the year – once in the summer for regular maintenance, then once again in the late fall, reopening in December.
Whether or not the City will receive the funding needed to carry out the project will be determined in 2020.
