Winnipeg's Crooked Brothers' Flin Flon performance a success

Musical storytellers a delight

The unique sound of Winnipeg’s Crooked Brothers brought back memories for Crystal Kolt during last week’s performance at the RH Channing Auditorium.

Kolt, cultural coordinator of the Flin Flon Arts Council, first saw the Crooked Brothers at the 2013 Artists Contact Showcase and knew the group would be a hit in Flin Flon.

“It was just as I remembered it,” said Kolt following the Friday, Jan. 16 local performance. “It’s been a long time since then, but hearing them and seeing them brought back why we wanted to share them with the community.”

The Crooked Brothers performed an eclectic variety of songs, including “Your Love Is A Ghost Town,” to an energetic and enthusiastic audience.

“They loved their visit to Flin Flon,” said Kolt. “It’s hard to describe what they are, what they do and how they sound. They are great storytellers and their sounds are unique. People loved the energy, the storytelling and the charismatic delivery of their style.”

Tina Law attended the Crooked Brothers’ concert and had nothing but glowing remarks afterwards.

“I thought it was a great concert,” Law said.  “Their personalities were as fantastic as their musical skills. I tapped my feet, danced in my seat and laughed for the whole show.”

Following the RH Channing Auditorium concert, audience members were able to attend a meet and greet with the Crooked Brothers.

“All I heard was positive feedback,” said Kolt. “And this meet and greet was the best attended we’ve ever had. So that was really interesting. It was very well received and delivered.”

Kolt says the Flin Flon area’s taste in music and art has grown over the years.

“People realize the treat they have had,” she said. “The audience has heard a lot, and the performers got a sense of that. The Crooked Brothers were so delighted to perform to an intent audience. They enjoyed that tremendously.”

Showcase

Kolt discovered the Crooked Brothers at the 2013 Artist Contact Showcase. With Flin Flon hosting the 2015 Artist Contact Showcase this October, there promises to be more performers on the horizon for the community.

“We pick and choose pretty carefully which artists we want to bring to our community,” said Kolt. “Anything we bring is up is always quality. There’s nothing better than live performances.”

Kolt says the added bonus is that the RH Channing Auditorium is a smaller venue that offers both performers and audiences an intimate experience.

“Once you hear live [music] and it’s only a matter of feet in front [of you], it’s nice when it all comes together,” said Kolt. “People realize the treat they have had.”
