Residents in Flin Flon and area know their local arts scene is really something special. Now readers all over Manitoba know it too, after the Flin Flon arts community was featured in Town and Country, a special section in the Winnipeg Free Press

Published on Saturday, Dec. 5, the article, “Flin Flon Rocks the Arts,” calls the community a cultural oasis with “a mine of local creative talent.”

Free Press writer Jennifer McFee interviewed Flin Flon Arts Council cultural coordinator Crystal Kolt for the piece.

McFee also explored the diversity of local arts organizations, giving a nod to Johnny’s Social Club, the NorVA Centre, and the Flin Flon Community Choir, among others.

“I’m happy they included all the different aspects of the arts, and how vibrant it is,” Kolt said of the article. “To be recognized in the province is something we’re really wanting to happen right now, with all the growth in the arts [locally].”

The attention on Flin Flon’s arts scene is particularly good timing, Kolt added, with a feasibility study currently underway for a proposed centre of arts and environment in Flin Flon.

The study into the viability of the North Central Canada Centre of Arts and Environment is being led by consultant Rick Schick of Schick Shiner & Associates, with support from Flin Flon-based Evolve Consulting and a local executive committee.

Results are expected in spring 2016.

When asked how she felt about the coverage in Town and Country, Kolt said, “Proud. Proud of our community and what we’re doing.”

Culture Days

Kolt also noted that Jean Giguère, co-chair and president of the Culture Days Manitoba Board, recently announced that Flin Flon was ranked second in the country for Culture Days 2015, compared with all participating communities with a population of 50,000 people or fewer.

Community rankings are based on the number of free Culture Days activities offered during the nationwide arts and culture festival each year.
