A guitar just wasn’t the right fit for a Creighton musician who decided to buy a ukulele online and see where it took her.

Lia Nasselquist had never played the four-stringed instrument before, but its small size and favourable reviews made it the perfect fit for her.

Now, a year later, she has created her own YouTube channel and is posting videos of herself covering songs ranging from Disney tunes to the work of electropop star Lights.

Nasselquist has uploaded four covers with her ukulele as well as a handful of music videos she and friends have created over the past few years.

Nasselquist, who graduated from Creighton Community School in 2013, is no stranger to the music spotlight.

She has performed in many talent shows, coffee houses and productions with the school, as singing has always been a favourite pastime of hers.

Self taught

Nasselquist taught herself how to play the ukulele by watching videos and learning the chords.

“It’s really easy to play,” she said. “Most songs are made up of the same chords, so you can [pretty much] play anything if you know the chords.”

Disney tunes are among her favourite songs to play, but Nasselquist says she also likes pop and indie tunes.

Nasselquist first received notice by posting 15-second videos on her Instagram account of covers she had done.

A friend had suggested that she do a full-length cover of a few songs and post them online.

Nasselquist has posted her ukulele videos on her YouTube channel as well as Instagram and Facebook.

“I haven’t got any negative comments at all,” she said. “Everyone has been really encouraging and telling me to post more videos.”

Nasselquist plans to continue posting videos, but says she doesn’t have any covers in mind for her next upload.
